June 2014 marks the one year anniversary of Plastics SA’s first African Marine Debris Summit that took place at the SA National Biodiversity Institute at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town, last year.

The Summit, which was entitled “African lessons to inspire local actions” was the first of its kind ever to take place and saw the local plastics industry join hands with the Department of Environmental Affairs, the South African National Biodiversity Institute and the United Nations Environment Programme in bringing together marine debris researchers, natural resource managers, policy makers, industry representatives and the non-governmental community from across Africa to focus specifically on this issue.
