Study on Land-Sourced Litter A study was commissioned to look into land-sourced litter as a contribution to action point 2 of the “Declaration for Solutions on Marine Litter”: “Work with the scientific community and researchers to better understand and evaluate the scope, origins and impact of and solutions to marine litter.”

As a contribution to action point 2 of the “Declaration for Solutions on Marine Litter”: “Work with the scientific community and researchers to better understand and evaluate the scope, origins and impact of and solutions to marine litter”, in 2011, a consortium of Austrian, German and Swiss plastics, chemical and packaging industries has commissioned a study on land-sourced litter.

landsourced_litterThe commissioners were: Germany’s BKV (Plattform für Kunststoff und Verwertung) and IK (Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen), the KVS (Kunstoff Verband Schweiz) in Switzerland and FCIO (Fachverband der Chemischen Industrie Österreichs) in Austria. It was aimed at gathering high-quality data from a detailed literature survey regarding the current situation of land-sourced litter (LSL) in the Mediterranean, North and Baltic Seas that should serve as a long-term reference and provide a basis for subsequent discussion and strategies. It also sought to illustrate potential research and implementation activities for various stakeholders and behavioral aspects in the area of LSL and pave the way for sound impact assessment of the most efficient and effective ways of reducing land-sourced litter. The study represents a starting point for future work on preventing marine littering through mismanagement of plastics waste on land, i.e. land-sourced litter.
