Malaysian Plastics Manufacturers Association (MPMA)

The project aimed to develop an educational module on plastics to support current syllabus used in primary and secondary schools in Malaysia. The idea came about after observing frequent inaccurate and false information being spread around on plastics and its impact on human health and the environment.

Two modules were developed; (i) Plastic, Environment & You for primary schools (available in Malay, English, Mandarin and Tamil), and (ii) Plastic, Sustainability & You for secondary schools (available in Malay and English). Physical copy (book) and soft copy (e-book and interactive module) of the two modules were produced and distributed to a total of 10,208 primary and secondary schools in Malaysia, reaching up to 419,904 teachers and 4,939,959 students in the whole country.

The module highlights the importance of cleanliness as the basic of environmental sustainability, discusses major environmental challenges (global warming and marine litter), explains the unique properties of plastics and its wide application in various industries, and teaches the right way to manage plastics at the end of its life cycle through recycling.

Project Outcomes

  1. Module was launched together with YB Dr. Maszlee bin Malik, Minister of Education Malaysia.
  2. Follow-up activities to support the module are already in planning such as Train The Trainer (TTT) program with teachers to guide them on how to use the module effectively.
