New Jersey Waterways Litter Survey

In Fall 2019, Environmental Resources Planning, LLC (ERP) conducted a comprehensive litter survey of waterway-related sites throughout the State of New Jersey to evaluate the amount and composition of litter tallied on 94 representative waterway sites. The survey applied methodology used on roadways to waterway-related sites in other recent litter surveys. The project provided new data about the type and amount of litter in marine debris found throughout New Jersey’s water-related areas. The resulting data was analyzed to identify and examine any correlations to land-based litter documented in the 2017 statewide road survey.

Partners in the project included, Clean Communities Coordinators- Rebecca Turygan, Atlantic County Utilities Authority; Corporal Michael Ross, Ocean County Department of Corrections; Chris Sikorski, Middlesex County Solid Waste Management; and Joseph Slomian, Monroe Township (Middlesex County) who participated in the field surveys.
