The Season of Creation is an annual celebration of prayer and action to protect creation. It runs to all Sundays from the month of September 1 to October 4, this is the year when 2.2 billion Christians are invited to pray, care and act in protecting the creation God.
September 1 was proclaimed as a day of prayer for creation (World Day of Prayer for Creation, or Creation Day) by Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I for the Orthodox in 1989, and was embraced by the other major Christian European churches in 2001 and by Pope Francis for the Roman Catholic Church in 2015.
Christian Churches organizes and supports hundreds of events worldwide throughout the month, and they are engaging in different actions to care for creation and our environment throughout the season.
In line with the Season of Creation’s objective, the Philippine Plastics Industry Association, Inc. (PPIA) partnered with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM) and created a program entitled, “Plastic Recovery Caravan”. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Go and Repair my house as you can see lies in ruins”. The objective of the caravan is to give awareness about proper segregation of waste especially on plastic products.
For this year’s Season of Creation, the partner parishes are Parish of Sto. Niño de Tondo, (Manila), Parish of Mary the Queen (San Juan City), Sta. Clara de Montefalco Parish (Pasay City), and San Roque Parish (Mandaluyong City).
The mechanics of the program are the following;
- People will bring clean and dry all sizes of used/empty plastic wrappers, bags, straws and styro products to a parish of a certain barangays
- The parish will accept those non-traditional wastes and will replace it with condiments, school supplies and vegetable products.
- Then, the industry will collect the collected non-traditional wastes from the Churches and transfer it to proper recyclers for recycling.
A total of 3,721 pieces of plastics/laminates recovered for this year’s Season of Creation “Plastic Recovery Caravan”.
Simultaneously, RCAM with PPIA representatives conducts a presentation program about proper segregation and disposal of waste especially plastic products, Training of Eco-bricks making and solar power making with PET Bottles.
