France’s fishermen are being recruited to help fish out and recover floating marine debris in three coastal areas in France between 2012 and 2014. The three test areas are Honfleur, St. Jean de Luz and La Seyne sur Mer where high concentrations of marine litter have been identified. The French National Fisheries Committee has helped recruit the volunteers to carry out the programme. They will use anti-pollution Thomsea trawl nets and are responsible for monitoring the presence of floating debris, fishing it out of the water and generating data according to the Ospar protocol. All plastic debris collected will be analysed, sorted and routed for recycling or energy recovery by PAPREC, WFO France’s waste management partner.
